In World of Warcraft, the auction house is kind of like the stock market. You can get rich if you know how to buy low and sell high. For most people, that's easier said than done. But follow this advice, and it shouldn't be much of a problem for you.
First, do your homework. You should create a spreadsheet, and list different items you see for sale in the auction house. Track them for a week or two, writing down the amount of gold these items go for. Pretty soon you'll realize the market value for many different things, and when these items are priced high or low in relation to their average market value. Now simply by an item when it is either at a discount, or at an average price. In a day or two, when it goes up, simply sell it.
Another strategy that works effectively is what I call the scarcity tactic. Here's where you identify items that are in high demand, but currently have limited amounts. Then when the item is not available for sale, you can list it yourself and demand a very high price for it. Simply put, you're using the law of supply and demand as it applies to the World of Warcraft.
While you're monitoring the auction house, and getting a feel for how it works, you can accumulate items to sell by gathering them. This means when you first start out, you should choose a least one gathering profession (preferably two) and gather up vendor trash, and items from mineral veins as well as dead animals. Not only will you accumulate gold, you will also accumulate items to sell at the auction house, which you can use when you get really good at auctioning.
